Background of the Study

The integration of digital technologies into education has become increasingly important, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the need for online learning platforms and digital tools. In nursing education, digital learning is being used to enhance students' knowledge, skills, and competency in a more flexible and accessible manner (Adebayo et al., 2023). As the demand for digital learning in healthcare education grows, it is essential to assess the readiness of nursing students to effectively engage with digital learning tools and platforms.

The University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences has been exploring the possibility of incorporating more digital learning approaches into its curriculum. However, the success of these digital initiatives depends largely on students' readiness to adopt and use these technologies effectively. Readiness for digital learning encompasses not only access to digital tools but also students' attitudes, digital literacy, and motivation to engage with the content (Oluwaseun & Adebola, 2024).

Many studies suggest that the effective use of digital learning tools requires a combination of technical infrastructure, user competence, and an understanding of the pedagogical methods employed (Olumide & Samson, 2023). The readiness of nursing students to use these tools is influenced by various factors, including technological access, training, and support systems. While some students may embrace digital learning, others may encounter barriers such as inadequate digital literacy, lack of motivation, or technological challenges (Kehinde & Olawale, 2023).

This study aims to assess the readiness of nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences for digital learning. By identifying gaps in readiness and understanding the factors that affect students' engagement with digital learning, the study seeks to provide recommendations for improving digital learning initiatives and ensuring that nursing students are well-equipped for the demands of modern healthcare education.

Statement of the Problem

The shift towards digital learning in nursing education presents both opportunities and challenges. While digital tools have the potential to enhance the learning experience, students must be adequately prepared to engage with these technologies. The readiness of nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences to embrace and effectively use digital learning tools is currently unclear. There is a need for research to evaluate the students' preparedness for digital learning, considering factors such as access to technology, digital skills, and motivation. Without understanding these factors, the institution may face challenges in successfully implementing digital learning initiatives, which could affect the quality of nursing education and students' learning outcomes (Ogunyemi & Oluwatoyin, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the readiness of nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences for digital learning.

2. To identify the factors influencing students' readiness for digital learning in nursing education.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing students' preparedness for digital learning in nursing education.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of readiness of nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences for digital learning?

2. What are the factors that influence nursing students' readiness for digital learning in nursing education?

3. What strategies can be proposed to improve students' preparedness for digital learning in nursing education?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences are not fully prepared for digital learning.

2. Technological access and digital literacy significantly influence nursing students' readiness for digital learning.

3. Specific strategies can improve nursing students' readiness for digital learning in nursing education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing Sciences. The study will assess readiness based on students' perceptions, access to technology, and digital literacy. One limitation of the study is that it will not account for faculty preparedness or institutional factors that may also influence the successful integration of digital learning.
